That's why, when Rene Marie was asked to sing the Star Spangled Banner, she instead sang the "Black National Anthem," a.k.a. "Lift Every Voice."

Ms. Marie was asked to sing the National Anthem for the Denver, CO "State of the City" address by their Democratic mayor John Hickenlooper. Denver is hosting the Democratic National Convention in August and, as City Councilor Charlie Brown put it "This is not the way to start the convention."
